Homemade Temporary Green Hair Dye

Those colorful packets of powdered drink mix that kids love so much have found a new purpose. Powdered drink mix is popular as a hair dye, turning the hair a variety of unusual hues. Although dark hair won’t be markedly changed with the application of powdered drink mix, blond hair will take on dramatic effects, depending on the color of the powder. Your new hair color won’t be permanent, but the shade will last for several shampoos.

Instructions

1

Protect your skin from getting dyed by using petroleum jelly. Dip your finger into the jelly and spread it on your forehead, neck, ears and hairline to keep it from getting stained with Kool-Aid. After you have finished dyeing your hair, you can remove the jelly with a warm rag dipped in a soapy water solution.

2

Bleach or lighten your hair as desired. If you do not have blonde or light-colored hair, it may be hard to see the Kool-Aid dye. Consider using a bleach or color fixing solution to lighten your hair and prepare it for dying. Bleaching also helps the hair become more porous and absorb more color.

3

Empty several Kool-Aid packets into a small bowl. The more packets you use, the more vibrant your hair color will be. Sprinkle in several drops of cold water to create a paste. The ratio should be approximately one tablespoon of color to every teaspoon of water. Add a few drops of color-safe conditioner. This will not only soften your hair, but it will help the dye to distribute evenly throughout the hair. Mix it together with a coloring brush.

4

Spray the hair lightly with a spray bottle. Use your coloring brush to apply the dye throughout the area of the hair you want to cover. Once your hair is completely saturated, allow it to sit for as long as possible. To help the color to really set, consider wrapping your hair in plastic wrap and taping in place overnight. Be sure to cover your pillow with plastic or a case you don’t mind getting ruined.

5

Rinse away the dye with shampoo as usual. Use a conditioner in the hair, especially if you bleached or lightened your hair before dying. Let dry and style as desired.
